《奥本海默》由环球影业定于2023年7月21日上映，由于2020年底克里斯托弗·诺兰与华纳兄弟自《神奇女侠1984》开始在2021年全年实施的院线与HBO Max同步上映计划中产生分歧，使得诺兰宣布不再与华纳兄弟进行合作，因此本片成为诺兰继《记忆碎片》（2000年）后，第二部非华纳兄弟发行的电影。

2020年12月，华纳兄弟宣布计划将2021年上映的电影同时上线HBO Max。自2002年电影《针锋相对》后一直与华纳兄弟合作的电影制片人克里斯托弗·诺兰对这一决定感到质疑[2]。2021年1月，据报导诺兰的下一部电影可能是首部不是由华纳兄弟制作或发行的电影[3]。
